Spatial and temporal change assessment of marine ecological security in regions along the Maritime Silk Road

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The Maritime Silk Road presents not only great opportunities for development but also great challenges to marine ecological security. This study considered 30 countries along the Maritime Silk Road, constructed the indicator system for marine ecological security assessment based on the Environment–Economy–Society (EES) model and conducted a spatiotemporal change assessment of the marine ecological security of each country during 2013–2019. The results showed that in terms of marine environmental security, Tanzania has the highest marine environmental security index of 0.782, Bahrain has the lowest marine environmental security index of 0.196. In terms of marine economic security, from 2013 to 2019, there is an upward trend in marine economic security in South Asia. In terms of marine social security, Philippines has the best marine social security, with a security index of 0.787. From the comprehensive assessment results, the marine ecological security situation of the countries along the Maritime Silk Road generally shows an upward trend during the 2013-2019 period. Bahrain, Turkey, and other countries have lower scores in economic security such as the seawater industry and foreign trade, as well as worse performances in the construction of protected areas and the protection of marine organisms. Countries with better marine ecological security, such as Thailand, have performed well in attracting foreign tourists, foreign trade and protecting marine biodiversity. The results have reference significance for maintaining the health and sustainable development of regional marine environment.
