Obvious artificial intelligence ‐generated anomalies in published journal articles: A call for enhanced editorial diligence

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Key points• The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into academic publishing mirrors its broader societal infiltration, promising enhancements in research efficiency but simultaneously introducing complex ethical and practical dilemmas that warrant urgent attention.• The academic community is increasingly confronted with AI-generated anomalies within scholarly articles, underlining the imperative for stringent editorial scrutiny to preserve the integrity and credibility of published research.• Existing methodologies for detecting AI-generated content remain insufficiently robust, often failing to distinguish between human and AI-authored texts. This shortfall highlights the pressing need for continuous advancement in detection technologies to meet the evolving capabilities of AI.• The emergence of AI-related discrepancies calls for the immediate implementation of rigorous editorial standards, comprehensive training for peer reviewers and editors, and the adoption of advanced AI detection tools to uphold the quality of scholarly publications.• It is incumbent upon academic journals to champion ethical practices by mandating transparent disclosure of AI involvement in manuscript preparation, fostering a culture of accountability, and engaging the scholarly community in sustained discourse on the ethical implications of AI in research and publishing.
