Abstract: FHWSB as an integrated absorptive catalyst, based on Walnut shell biochar (WSB) via hydrochloric acid modification and ferrous chloride impregnation, was prepared, reacted with H 2 O 2 to generate active free radicals •OH and •O 2 − , which oxidized and degraded about 80% of micro-pollutant sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from water, effectively resolving micro-pollutants' removal being inefficient because of high toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation in existed methods. It was clarified the specific degradation pathways and mechanisms of SMX by FHWSB synergistic H 2 O 2 via characterization and analysis assisted DFT calculations. Furthermore, it was found that the toxicity of a series of intermediates produced by SMX degraded continued to decline, consistent with its direction of degradation via toxicological analysis. The work provides a simple and feasible strategy for the effective removal of antibiotic micro-pollutants in aquatic environments.
