EP17.38: Dietary intake in early‐ and late‐onset pre‐eclampsia

Year: 2024
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: This research determines maternal nutritional intake and micronutrients in pre-eclampsia and normotensive women. A cross-sectional study on 148 subjects ranging in gestational age from 20 to 40 weeks. Nutrient intake in macronutrients and micronutrients calculate using Nutrisurvey from a semi-quantitative frequency food questionnaire (FFQ) conversion. Pregnancy BMI was significantly higher in the pre-eclamptic group (p < 0.001). Most participants had a nutritional intake below the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) recommendations and the 2013 nutritional adequacy rate (RDA). There was no statistically significant difference in maternal energy intake between the normotensive and pre-eclamptic groups, with a median of 1646 Kcal. Women with PE had higher blood pressure and fat intake, but lower average daily carbohydrates, protein, and fibre intakes were significantly different between pre-eclamptic and healthy pregnant women (p < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences among the groups of the micronutrients except for vitamin A and Vitamin B6, Zinc, and Vitamin E. Our study proposed that both pre-eclampsia and normotensive significantly differ in daily intake of macronutrients and micronutrients. Protein and fibre consumption is essential in preventing early-onset pre-eclampsia. Thus, in pregnant women, a balanced dietary intake of macronutrients and micronutrients in daily consumption should be highly considered.
