OC09.02: Enhancing education in fetal cardiology: the role of three‐dimensional virtual models and navigation technology

Year: 2024
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: To show the use of 3D virtual model and navigation in evaluating, teaching, and discussing fetal heart anatomy in normal and malformed hearts. Fetal echocardiogram scans of a normal heart, tetralogy of Fallot, Ebstein anomaly, and transposition of great arteries were obtained. 3D volumes of the fetal hearts were acquired using automatic scanning techniques. Next, the acquired volumes were segmented using 3D SLICER software to create detailed anatomical models. Then, segmented models were used to construct virtual reality rooms for educational purposes. Within these virtual environments, lectures on fetal heart anatomy and congenital heart diseases were conducted. Also, virtual navigation tools were implemented to allow for in-depth exploration and evaluation of both normal and abnormal fetal hearts. This interactive approach enabled the observation and explanation of key characteristics of the heart structures. The use of virtual reality and navigation techniques aided precise visualization and detailed analysis of fetal hearts, enhancing the educational experience for students and residents in the field of pediatric cardiology. Furthermore, interdisciplinary discussions on outcome and prognosis were facilitated among cardiologists, neonatologists, and surgeons within the virtual environment, aiding in decision-making processes for perinatal care and outcomes. The use of metaverse as an educational tool to study the fetal heart anatomy presents a significant advancement in fetal cardiology field. Through the creation of 3D virtual models and navigation systems, a deeper understanding of heart structures can be achieved. This innovative approach allows for examination, teaching, and discussion of normal fetal hearts as well as congenital heart anomalies. This study suggests the effectiveness of these technologies in improving education, understanding fetal heart anatomy, and enhancing collaborative discussions in the field of fetal and pediatric cardiology.
