EP08.27: Maternal characteristics associated with Crown–rump length in first trimester scan

Year: 2024
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: In the present study we aimed to assess the association between Crown–rump length (CRL) in first trimester scan with maternal characteristics. The present cohort study included pregnant women that consecutively underwent a first trimester scan in the two different fetomaternal centres in Central Greece during a 10-year period. A prospective database was created included basic demographics, medical history and CRL values. Informed consent was obtained from all participants. Experimental therapeutic protocols are not applicable in this study. All data were analysed anonymously using code numbers with respect to the patient's privacy and collected in the context of routine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS version 26.0. In total 2350 pregnant women were included in the present study. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between CRL measured in the first trimester scan and maternal age (r = 0.147, p < 0.001), reporting that increasing age was associated with increasing CRL values. Moreover, maternal height was also positively correlated with CRL (r = 0.058, p = 0.005), meaning that increased maternal height resulted in increased CRL. However, the association between maternal Body Mass Index (BMI) and CRL was not statistically significant (r=-0.04, p = 0.06). Other factors, included smoking habit and parity had also no effect in CRL values. In multivariate analysis, increased maternal age and height were identified as independent factors associated with increased CRL in first trimester. Investigating factors associated with CRL in first trimester scan can help obstetricians understanding growth patterns in early pregnancy. A finding of great interest is that maternal age and height, but not BMI, were associated with CRL in first trimester.
