Mesenteric Meckel’s Diverticulum

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Sir, We found the article “An uncommon location of Meckel’s diverticulum: A rare entity” by Kashiv et al. intriguing. We want to add a few essential details regarding Meckle’s mesenteric Merkel’s diverticulum (MMD) that you may find helpful to the esteemed readers of your journal. The authors correctly highlighted the rarity of MMD and its potential for serious complications.[1] MMD may result from a short, persistent vitelline artery or the connection of the vitelline duct to the ileal mesentery. Yagnik and Dawka identified diverticulitis as the most common presentation for MMD, followed by perforation.[2] They also suggested expanding the “rule of 2 for MD” to include the possibility of two locations either mesenteric or antimesenteric positions.[2] A MMD is often confused with an ileal duplication cyst or a non-Meckel’s diverticulum. The diagnosis is confirmed by continuity with the bowel wall, a typical location 60 cm from the ileocecal valve, and a biopsy indicating a true diverticulum.[2] Financial support and sponsorship Nil.
