H008 Implementation of the physiotherapy guidelines in healthcare clinics: a resource toolbox
Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Background Clinical Guidelines for Exercise and Physiotherapy in Huntington’s Disease (HD) were published in 2020. Physiotherapists working in HD Specialist clinics are key stakeholders in the implementation of these guidelines. Resources that facilitate implementation of these guidelines in clinical practice are urgently needed. Aim To generate clear and detailed resources targeting physiotherapists, healthcare providers, and people with HD that increase uptake of the Physiotherapy Guidelines. Methods A team of rehabilitation providers, including physiotherapists and psychologists specializing in HD that are part of the EHDN Physiotherapy Working Group worked collaboratively to create resources suitable for implementation into clinical practice within HD specialist or inpatient/outpatient clinics. These are applicable to individuals with HD, most appropriately at premanifest or early disease stages. Specific topics included: Aerobic and Resistance Training, Balance and Gait Training, and Addressing Cognitive, Emotional, and Behavioral Barriers to Exercise. Results/Outcomes: Six handouts were created – two covering each topic, with one of each pair tailored for healthcare providers and one for people with HD. Conclusions Our team created freely available resources that can be easily implemented by the multidisciplinary team in clinical practice to facilitate the uptake of the Physiotherapy Clinical Guidelines. These resources will be disseminated to ENROLL-HD Clinics, USA Centers of Excellence, and HD associations worldwide, including those in Europe and Australia.
