Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Clinical Trial
Abstract: Objective: This pilot study evaluated the effectiveness of disaster preparedness education for wheelchair users, focusing on enhancing self-management skills during emergencies. Methods: A pre-post self-controlled experimental study involved wheelchair users from a "Disabled Self-help Group" in Mianzhu, Sichuan Province. The intervention comprised an educational session addressing local disaster knowledge (fires, earthquakes, mudslides), developing tailored preparedness plans, and assembling disaster kits, using lectures, discussions, and disaster scenario responses. Results: Significant differences in disaster preparedness knowledge were observed across age groups (P<0.05), but not in attitudes or behaviors (P>0.05). Demographics (gender, education, marital status, income, employment, family composition, disability reasons, wheelchair type and use duration) didn't influence knowledge, attitudes, or behaviors (P>0.05). Post-intervention, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors scores improved significantly (P<0.05), with a noticeable regression in knowledge and attitudes over time. Behavior scores indicated a lasting intervention effect. Conclusion: The educational intervention significantly enhanced disaster preparedness knowledge and attitudes among wheelchair users, promoting proactive behaviors in disaster response and preparedness.
