Abstract: In This Issue Lipid metabolism controls RORγt and Th17 cellsEnormous progress has been made in delineating the many metabolic processes that mediate a range of functions of various immune cells at different stages.Th17 cells are a subset of CD4 + T-helper cells that protect against infection but can mediate harmful inflammation and autoimmunity.RORγt is the "master" transcription factor expressed in Th17 cells. In their Review article, Yusuke Endo and colleagues discuss the roles of lipid metabolism on RORγt transcriptional activity and the differentiation and function of Th17 cells. They begin by summarizing the complex and dynamic metabolic processes that occur during the differentiation of various T-cell subsets. They detail how lipid metabolic pathways are crucial for the function of T-cell subsets before focusing on how these pathways modulate Th17 cell function and pathogenicity (see figure). Finally, they describe the modulation of RORγt activity by synthetic ligands and lipid metabolism, discussing how targeting RORγt functions offers a novel therapeutic approach for autoimmunity.
