Abstract: Progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, Halfway to 2030The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were set in 2015 as the measures of achievement for the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. There are 17 goals, each with a number of specific operational targets. The UN Secretary-General periodically reports to the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development on the status of the goals. The latest report, Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals: Report of the Secretary-General, issued on May 2, 2024, as UN document A/79/79-E/2024/54, records SDG achievements and shortfalls at the halfway point to 2030.The report makes mostly bleak reading. The Covid pandemic was a major interruption to many positive trends but, as the report puts it, "signs of a determined, sustained global comeback have yet to emerge."Progress toward some of the goals has stalled or even regressed.Altogether, "the world is severely off track to realize the 2030 Agenda."Reprinted below are selected paragraphs from the report, (1) summarizing the overall status of the SDGs and the status of the first five goals (covering poverty, food security, health, education, and gender) and ( 2) detailing the report's findings on several specific health targets. The paragraph numbering of the report is retained.[Overall status of the SDGs]
