Abstract: This paper uses the LISS data, a Dutch longitudinal dataset, to study value change in adults aged 25-70 over 11 years from 2008 to 2019, using multilevel modeling and the neo-socioanalyitcal model (NSM) as a theoretical framework. We find few cohort differences, large differences between age groups and value change within individuals that continues until late adulthood. Additionally, gender plays a small role in the changes within individuals while gender differences in values are largely stable across the lifespan. We conclude that the NSM provides a fruitful framework to interpret value change observed as a maturation process towards becoming functioning members of society with value change towards social-focused values in middle adulthood and shifts to growth-values in late adulthood.
