Alkaline activation via in-situ caustification of one-part binders of composite precursors of waste glass and limestone
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Mixtures of waste glass (WG), limestone (LS), Na2CO3 and CaO powders were used to develop novel one-part in situ alkali-activated cements (AAC). The hydration of Na2CO3 and CaO powders promoted an in situ caustification reaction, forming CaCO3 and NaOH that promoted the dissolution of the WG and LS, while influencing the micro- and molecular features of the resulting cementitious products. Pastes and mortars developed 1-year strengths of up to 35 MPa and were stable underwater. The characterization by XRD, SEM, EDS and 29Si-NMR indicated that after using a Na2CO3:CaO ratio close to 1:1, the main reaction products were polymerized C-S-H, silica gel and Ca-modified silica gel, intimately intermixed and possibly crosslinked through Q3 bonds. Such coexistence of reaction products was better in terms of strength and underwater stability than the resulting assemblage from with powdered blends of WG+LS+CaO activated with solutions of NaOH previously reported
