Optimizing In-Cabin Communication and User Experience in Future Vehicles through Dynamic Expressive Interior Lighting

Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This paper explores optimising in-cabin communication and user experience in future vehicles through dynamic, expressive interior lighting. Traditionally, vehicle interior lighting has been static and functional, but recent advancements have shifted towards mood-enhancing lighting. With AI technologies becoming integral to vehicles, sophisticated and intelligent interaction experiences are essential. This study uses the Volkswagen ID series' dynamic lighting feature to examine dynamic mood lighting as a tool for intuitive, non-intrusive communication. We assess the effectiveness and limitations of various lighting sequences through quantitative and qualitative methods. Our findings reveal key insights into user preferences and challenges, providing a framework for designing adaptive interior lighting systems. The results highlight the importance of user-centred design in enhancing driving experiences and offer directions for future research in automotive human-computer interaction.
