Abstract: As digital content increasingly moves away from free access, microtransactions may provide an alternative. Though there are several studies on gaming microtransactions, there is a need for studies focusing on microtransactions as a general digital content payment mechanism. As such, this study examines the historical trajectory of microtransactions and presents a taxonomy for microtransactions based on consumer buying behavior. Business models for microtransaction payment processing are presented and issues related to microtransactions are examined. 180 consumer interviews were conducted to gauge the receptiveness and perception of microtransactions. The results indicate that consumers are receptive to the concept of microtransactions for other forms of digital content and they are willing to spend on digital content and services using microtransactions.
