Type: article
Abstract: A multilayered ionic cross-linked alginate-hydrogel-coated zeolite (Al-H-M-Z) was prepared via synthesis. The essential divalent cations, Ca2+ and Mg2+, were incorporated to facilitate alginate-polymer interactions at a Ca2+: Mg2+ ratio of 0.73:1.85, and Al-H-M-Z was used for ammonium adsorption. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm analyses revealed that Al-H-M-Z had a maximum adsorption quantity of 56.5 mg g−1 and an adsorption intensity of 0.703, which were 7.24-fold and 1.59-fold higher than those of a natural zeolite (7.80 mg g−1 and 0.442), respectively. These results were derived from the modified structural and surface chemistry. The large surface area (30.1 m2 g−1), extended micropore volume (72.4ž10−3 cm3 g−1), and narrow pore diameter (9.61 nm) of Al-H-M-Z prevented the adsorbed ammonium from leaking. Moreover, the multilayered coating with diverse chemical bonding provided physicochemical adsorption driving forces. The thermodynamic analysis of ammonium adsorption using Al-H-M-Z revealed favorable endothermic and spontaneous adsorption at high temperatures. Seawater effluents from a fish farm were treated with Al-H-M-Z and the natural zeolite, and Al-H-M-Z exhibited 1.42-fold higher ammonium adsorption capabilities.
