Additive effects of rice husk-based carbon-silica composites on adsorption of diclofenac sodium and carbamazepine from aqueous solutions

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate sustainable materials from rice husks for the adsorption of diclofenac sodium (DCF) and carbamazepine (CBZ). The adsorbents were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, nitrogen sorption and elemental analysis techniques to obtain information on morphology, chemical composition, textural properties and surface characteristics. Adsorption studies were carried out to investigate the additive effect of the adsorption capacity of carbon-silica composites towards activated carbon (RH‑AC) and biogenic silica (RH-BS) from rice husks. The maximum adsorption capacity of carbon-silica composites was 4119 mg g−1 for DCF and 584 mg g−1 for CBZ. The additive effect of the adsorption capacity by the carbon-silica composites occurs through the formation of hydrogen bonds and π-π electron donor-acceptor interactions caused by the carbon component and the formation of hydrogen bonds by silanol groups in the silica. Carbon-silica composites may have great potential for pharmaceutical adsorption applications. This study provides evidence for the additive effect of carbon-silica composites in the adsorption of pharmaceuticals compared to biogenic silica and activated carbon, for reduction in wastewater.
