Transition of phosphorus balance steady-state redirects the relationship of phosphorus mediums in Poyang Lake, China

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The phosphorus fate is critical to aquatic environments and ecosystem in lakes. The relationship between phosphorus distribution in different mediums remain unknow under the fluctuation of phosphorus balance steady-state in lake. This study examines the phosphorus balance and retention of import and export in the Poyang Lake from 1990 to 2019, uncovering the transition process of phosphorus balance steady-state and its influence on the phosphorus distribution relationship in different mediums. Here we demonstrated that the phosphorus balance steady-state underwent four transitions during study period 1990-2019, leading to a more fragile lake environment and ecosystem, and the intervals between quasi-balance states became shorter in Poyang Lake. The rate of sediment phosphorus burial and phosphorus net deposition increased significantly before the phosphorus balance steady-state Ⅲ (2011-2013). However the net deposition rate decreased 5.3% with an increase in aquatic phosphorus after the third transition of phosphorus balance steady-state (2014) in Poyang Lake. The role of sediment redirects as a net phosphorus source from net phosphorus sink for water environment. The influence of phosphorus retention and sediment burial changed from being in antagonism redirect to synergism on increasing aquatic phosphorus content, which led to a 5.4% increase in risk sources of aquatic phosphorus loading. These findings reinforce our understanding phosphorus cycling and providing guidance for water environment treatment in lakes.
