A Critical Analysis of Standards of Practice for the Family Mediator in Nigeria

Abstract: Family disputes are particularly peculiar because of the ties between the parties involved. The settlement of such conflicts requires a resolution mechanism that not only decides the rights and obligations of the parties but addresses the root causes of the dispute and preserves their relationships. This is mediation's forte – settling disputes and addressing the root cause of disputes. Concerning family disputes, mediation plays a significant role. This article finds that mediation is a practical and effective tool for family dispute resolution and makes recommendations for its wider adoption and use in Nigeria.
