Low-Cost Composting Of Organic Solid Waste For Sustainable Biowaste Management

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: One organic material recycling technique that happens naturally is composting.Composting is recognized as a sustainable waste management approach in which microorganisms treat and stabilize biodegradable waste to obtain compost as a final product. Most of the food waste is sent to landfills and produces methane gas which causes the greenhouse effect. The objective of this research is to reduce organic waste by composting using designed tumbler composter.A compost tumbler is essentially a closed drum landfill rotated to mix the contents inside that facilitates decomposition of waste into organic compost. The study was initiated by sketching realtime design of a tumbler composter and assembled using the tools.Organic waste was collected, and the parameters observed included the size of the chopped particles and the capacity of organic waste. The trial was conducted to determine the ability of the composter designed to carry out the composting process. The results of experiments in the composter performance are that the composter can produce compost in one process with a maximum processing time and accommodate a maximum of 5kg of household waste, with air ventilation and temperature regulation. The significance of the study benefits to adapt the system managing the organic wastes into compost that can be used in domestic applications.
