Abstract: A medical item called GELFOAM Sterile Compressed Sponge is designed to be applied as a hemostatic to surfaces that are bleeding.It is an off-white, nonelastic, porous, malleable, water-insoluble substance made from purified swine skin, USP granules of gelatin, and USP water for injection.It is able to absorb and retain many times its own weight in blood and other fluids within its interstices, and it may be sliced without fraying [1].Its exact mode of action is unknown, although it seems to have a stronger physical impact than changing the blood clotting mechanism.GELFOAM is fully absorbed with minimal tissue reaction when used in moderation.The amount utilized, the level of saturation with blood or other fluids, and the usage site all affect how much of this absorption occurs.GELFOAM often absorbs fully into soft tissues in four to six weeks without causing a significant amount of scarring [2].It liquefies in two to five days when applied to bleeding mucosa in the nose, the rectal area, or the vagina.
