Ectopic Olfactory Receptors: Their Significance In Fats And Carbohydrates Metabolism

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Restoring glucose and cholesterol levels to normal is essential for treating the metabolic syndrome, which has emerged as one of the world's greatest public health concerns. The regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism is one of the many biological processes in which olfactory receptors (ORs), which are expressed in extra-nasal organs, are involved.Numerous metabolic processes, such as fatty acid oxidation, lipogenesis, thermogenesis, insulin and glucagon secretion, can be regulated by ectopic ORs.Recognizing the physiological role and using appropriate ligands to decipher the olfactory recognition code makes ectopic ORs promising targets for metabolic syndrome treatment. We outline the functions and processes of ectopic ORs in the control of lipid and glucose metabolism in this review, along with a summary of the relevant natural ligands and a discussion of current issues and the possibility for treating the metabolic syndrome by focusing on ORs.
