Advancements in Ventilatory Support for Very Preterm Infants with Birth Asphyxia: Outcomes and Challenges

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Evaluations of asphyxiated very low birth weight infants indicate that the outcomes are grave highlighting the importance of high-end ventilatory support in NICU. New-generation ventilators including HFOV, NAVA, and HFNC can enhance survival and favorable neurodevelopmental consequences in the high-risk group of preterm neonates. This work aims to assess the effects of these advanced technologies on conventional mechanical ventilation. Data were collected on clinical outcomes using a cohort study design, survival rates, neurodevelopmental progress, and respiratory health with statistical control to confounding factors such as gestational age and birth weight. These studies show that these advanced ventilatory supports are beneficial, and they provide a better survival rate and better neurodevelopmental profile. However, the study also describes shortcomings like the technical difficulties of applying these technologies in clinical practice and the appearance of adverse events. The study highlights the potential of these new technologies but at the same time calls for further studies and development to achieve the best utilization of the new technology in NICUs to enhance the survival rate of very preterm infants with birth asphyxia.
