Abstract: This research article aims at identifying the family characteristics and child-rearing practices on the psychological and developmental problems of children. The study is based on family practices such as parenting, family type, socio-economic status, and culture and their effects on children’s emotional health and development with the help of quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative findings show that authoritative parenting improves psychosocial health, while neglectful and authoritarian parenting is negative for health. The interviews also give more details about the problems children from one and two-parent families experience due to the decrease in parental care and the increase in stress. Socioeconomic characteristics were defined to influence the quality of parenting and children’s development with low income as a determinant of high stress and fewer resources. Culture also has a great impact on the child's development processes and the social and emotional development of the child. The study therefore points to the need for specific prevention and intervention programs for improving parenting practices and supporting the different forms of families as well as the socioeconomic and cultural factors in child development. The findings of this study are useful to practitioners and policymakers who want to enhance the welfare of children in different types of families.
