Abstract: A 5-year-old girl was evaluated for an intermittent thoracic sound present for two years, often associated with viral infections. The clinical examination was normal, except for mild mitral prolapse with minimal regurgitation noted in a prior echocardiogram. A recorded sound showed a rhythmic squeak of about 90 beats per minute. At follow-up, the sound was only audible with a stethoscope. A further echocardiogram confirmed the mitral prolapse. Generally, mild mitral prolapse can produce an audible often intermittent thoracic sound, but without significant risks. The recommendation was to improve hydration so as to reduce the sound intensity.
