Comparative Study on Natural and Chemical Coagulants for the Treatment of Domestic Wastewater
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In this study, the effectiveness of three coagulants Alum, Mango, and Moringa in removing turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), and color from domestic wastewater. The optimum dosages were identified as 150 mg/L for Alum and Moringa and 200 mg/L for Mango. At these dosages, the highest turbidity removal rates were observed: 84.17% for Alum at 80 rpm over 45 minutes, 55.31% for Mango at 50 rpm over 30 minutes, and 59.17% for Moringa at 120 rpm over 60 minutes. For TDS removal at a higher dosage of 250 mg/L, Mango achieved the highest removal efficiency of 31.68% at 80 rpm over 30 minutes, followed by Alum 23.30% and Moringa 17.52%, both at 80 rpm over 60 minutes.Similarly, for EC removal at 250 mg/L, Mango exhibited the highest removal efficiency of 31.68%under the same conditions, with Alum and Moringa achieving 23.30% and 17.48% removal, respectively. In terms of color removal, Alum and Moringa performed exceptionally well at the 250 mg/L dosage, achieving 87.80% removal at 120 rpm over 30 minutes and 89.70% removal at 50 rpm over 45 minutes, respectively, while Mango increased the color of the water. The findings highlight the potential of natural coagulants in wastewater treatment, with specific conditions optimizing their effectiveness in different domestic wastewater quality parameters.
