Effects of deficit irrigation on potato yield and water productivity in northern Ethiopia

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In the northern Ethiopia, potatoes are frequently grown using excessive irrigation water. Considering that water is a scarce and expensive resource in semi-arid environments, it is essential to develop irrigation techniques and/or better irrigation management that promote water efficiency & effectiveness. A field trial was carried out for two successive years to study the effects of water deficit on potato yield, water productivity, & net return. Deficit irrigation treatments had an effect on yield & yield related components, however they were not statistically different in all cases. Treatments had an important effect on tuber yield, water productivity, & plant height. The no-deficit treatment produced the highest tuber yield. In most situations, differences in tuber production and plant height between the initial, late season (25% deficit), other stages using full demand, & no-deficit treatments are modest & statistically inconsequential. The all-out water productivity & irrigation water productivity were found at 25% deficit treatment (T3) in the initial & late season stages. Under both land & waterlimited conditions, the 25% deficit (T3) approach produced the highest net financial return at the initial & late season stages of potato. The findings will be useful in policy planning for irrigation management in order to maximize net financial returns from limited land and water resources.
