Characterization by x-ray fluorescence (FRX) of precipitate from dental radiographic processing
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction: Radiography plays a fundamental role in dental diagnosis, using chemical products in radiographic processing. However, the by-products of this process generate a significant environmental impact, with toxic waste which, when disposed of inappropriately, poses environmental risks. Methods: This was a quantitative and analytical experimental study, analyzing a loose powder sample of material precipitated in the fixing solution, collected at the Radiology Clinic of the Federal University of Paraíba. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) was used. Results: The concentrate showed a high sulphur oxide content, indicating its potential reuse in the chemical industry, in various applications. The choice between elemental and precipitated sulphur in fixative solutions should take into account factors such as availability, environmental impact and purity. Conclusion: This study highlights the relevance of reusing sulphur oxide precipitate from radiographic processing, adopting a sustainable approach. In addition, it guides future research into the in-depth exploration of the use of by-products from this process.
