A Study on Effectiveness of Converged Education Using Co-teaching Methodology

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In 2023, at the university where the primary researcher is affiliated, the necessity for developing courses that could foster software knowledge and the ability to communicate in English in a global context was identified while organizing a software(SW)-centered curriculum to enhance digital literacy. As a result of this necessity, an SW English course was developed.Considering how to run this course effectively, it was designed to consist of two professors and utilize a co-teaching method to provide students with specialized lectures. This study aims to analyze how effective the course, taught by two instructors-one specializing in AI information security and the other in English language and literature-was for the students and to what extent it helped students enhance their software major knowledge and foreign language skills.A survey was conducted before and after the lecture with 28 students from the AI Information Security Department and the Future Mobility Engineering Department who took the SW English course in the first semester of the 2024 academic year.None of the students from the two departments had prior experience with a co-teaching method where multiple instructors were involved in a single course.Analyzing the students' responses revealed that 50% of the students took the course to earn major credits and initially responded that IT terminology or English proficiency was not high. However, in the post-lecture survey, 77% of the students reported that their skills had improved, and 86.4% expressed satisfaction with the course taught by two instructors, stating that it was helpful for their professional development. It was found that through the co-teaching method, students could meet various instructors with expertise within a single course, significantly aiding their learning.
