Abstract: Colman notes that even after completing analytic training, this rigidity turns up to characterize many relationships within analytic institutes because there is so much fear of one another's superego judgments. He refers to Jung's Answer to Job (1952) to explain that analysts have to move away from the superego rather than submit to it-it has to be confronted and engaged with.Defensive compliance, rebellion, and denial are all dead ends for managing anxieties stirred during training, anxieties that stem from multiple fears about judgment, criticism, possible punishment, and retaliation. The final chapter by Harding is an appeal for ethical thinking that is open, not closed.Primitive forms of the superego trap us within fixed systems. She remarks that "moral uncertainty" is part of an ethical analytic attitude because this is how we help patients to think for themselves about what is right for them.I found this book to be very stimulating, and I recommend it highly to any analyst, psychotherapist, candidate, or trainee who recognizes that the superego has never gone away.Actually, it continues to show up in our practices in ways that can constrict, handcuff, and even deaden us and our patients.
