Abstract: Background Early identification of cardiovascular disease (CVD) allows for timely intervention, which improves cardiovascular-related health outcomes. The service was established to address incidental coronary artery calcification identified during lung screening. This service currently offers lifestyle modification and drug therapy, thereby alleviating the burden on primary care. Aim The aim of the service evaluation was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Cheshire and Merseyside CVD Prevention Service. Methods Service usage data was collated from electronic patient record systems. Metrics included the number of patients identified at increased risk of CVD, types of interventions provided, and patient feedback. Data was collected over an eight-month period from October 2023 to May 2024. Results Early findings indicate that the service has successfully reduced primary care referrals requiring immediate action from 64% to 36% in 2023/24. 698 patients were reviewed, of these, 307 (43.9%) received lifestyle modification referrals. 535 patients (77.1%) accepted lipid-lowering therapy. Further investigations were required for 138 patients (19.8%), including undiagnosed hypertension, impaired glucose regulation and dysrhythmia. 51 patients (7.3%) required an urgent referral due to clinical signs and symptoms. Patient feedback was largely positive, with 97.4% of respondents indicating they would recommend the service to friends and family. Conclusion The service has successfully reduced primary care referrals 64% to 36%, demonstrating its effectiveness in managing CVD risk factors and alleviating the burden on primary care. A significant number of patients (698) were reviewed, with a substantial proportion receiving lifestyle modification (43.9%) and accepting lipid-lowering therapy (77.1%), highlighting patient engagement and implementation of both lifestyle and pharmacological interventions. Patient feedback indicates high satisfaction and confidence in the care provided.
