Abstract: F I G U R E 1Relationships between the folate cycle, vitamin B12, nucleotide synthesis, and the methylation cycle.Folic acid is a synthetic unnatural form of the vitamin that first must be reduced by dihydrofolate reductase to the natural tetrahydrofolate form to enter the folate cycle.5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (5MTHF) is the active transport form into the nervous system. The methyl group of 5MTHF enters the methylation cycle and is ultimately utilized in numerous genomic and nongenomic methylation reactions.
