Safeguarding Our Healers: An Urgent Call for Societal Change
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Dear Sir, Our medical institutions are under attack, and the effectiveness and safety of our health-care system are at risk due to the startling increase in violence against health-care personnel in recent years. To ensure the safety of our devoted carers and the general well-being of our community, we as a community must address this issue with the haste and resolution it requires.[1] The front lines of our health-care system are manned by medical professionals, including nurses, physicians, paramedics, and support personnel, who put in endless hours to save lives and relieve pain. Nonetheless, they are subjected to a rising number of verbal, physical, and psychological harassment. This unsettling trend threatens not just their security but also the standard of care that we all depend on.[2] This crisis is a result of multiple factors. First, the strain on our health-care system is caused by a high volume of patients, administrative work, and long work hours. Second, factors such as poor management, inadequate training, and unclear job roles within the system will lead the environment conducive to conflict. Third, frustrations resulting from delays, unfulfilled expectations, or communication breakdowns frequently lead to aggressive behavior directed at those who are trying to assist.[3] The impacts of such violence are profound. Health-care professionals suffer from physical injuries, stress, anxiety, and burnout. These conditions undermine their ability to provide optimal care and may lead to higher turnover rates, further straining an already overburdened system. The ripple effects are felt not only within health-care facilities but throughout our communities.[4] Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach. Some of the recommendations that we can bring to reduce the impact are: IMPLEMENTING ROBUST SECURITY MEASURES Stringent security measures must be implemented. This includes installation of surveillance systems, the presence of security personnel, and establishments of clear reporting protocols for incidents of violence. Moreover, health-care workers should receive training in conflict management and de-escalation techniques, complemented by access to mental health support services to address the trauma they may experience. LEGISLATIVE ACTION Legislative action is also crucial. We need stronger laws to protect health-care workers and enforce penalties for those who commit acts of violence. Such legal protections will signal a clear message that aggression toward health-care professionals is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. To make this possible, we need a uniform act all over the country. PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS Equally important is a cultural shift in how we view and interact with our health-care workers. Society must recognize the immense value of these individuals and foster an environment of respect and understanding. Public awareness campaigns can play a pivotal role in changing attitudes and reducing instances of violence. INCLUSION OF SELF DEFENSE TRAINING IN COMPETENCY-BASED MEDICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM This is one another method to reduce the impact of violence among the health-care professionals. Addressing violence against health-care professionals requires a comprehensive approach involving prevention, support, and enforcement. By acknowledging and tackling the root causes, enhancing security and support measures, and advocating for stronger legal protections, we can work toward creating safer and more supportive environments for those dedicated to providing care. “The hand that heels should not Bleed” Financial support and sponsorship None.
