Optimization and modeling of the insulating and mechanical properties of fired ceramics for sustainable construction
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: On account of the high cost of building construction, alternative building materials are sought after. Equally, owing to climate change, there is increasing demand for insulating bricks. Clay which is readily available in our environments has gained prominence in this aspect and when fired, they gained enough stability for such a purpose. In this study, Owode clay hill, which is yet to gain attention as a building material, was assessed for its insulating and mechanical properties. Also, wood saw dust (WSD) was also added as pore former to observe the effect on the insulation and mechanical properties. The report was designed to model the performance of the resulting fired bricks and realize an optimum value for the combination of the parameters. From the results, it is revealed that the input variables: wood saw dust and firing temperature significantly affected the responses and the developed model were statistically fit for response prediction. At 1.6 wt.% WSD and 1200℃, the optimum performance of the fired bricks was realized with respect to all the responses examined. This study therefore showcased the possibility of using Owode clay within bricks construction for the purpose of providing mass housing for the teaming population.
