Turn on the lights! Building the evidence base to inform cancer of sexual and gender minority groups
Year: 2024
Type: editorial
Abstract: For decades, inattention to the cancer burden affecting sexual and gender minority groups achieved by not collecting data on sexual orientation and gender identity from patients with cancer has hobbled estimation of trends and risk of cancer for sexual and gender minority groups as well as identification of disparities, blinding us to gaps in knowledge and to unaddressed patient needs. Until regional and national surveillance data are available to facilitate measurement of trends and disparities, we must recognize the benefit of resources like the Nurses’ Health Study II to produce valuable insights.
