The brain–eye connection: More than just action potentials

Abstract: In this issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Cao et al. (https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20240386) demonstrate that the connection between the eye and the brain goes beyond the impulses carried by the optic nerve and that in Alzheimer's disease (AD), the influx of toxic Aβ from the brain to the retina underlies AD-induced retinal degeneration.
