Intra-peritoneal migration of abdominal drain after cholecystectomy-laparoscopic retrieval: A case report
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: We read this article by Bindal et al.[1] titled, ‘Intra-peritoneal migration of abdominal drain after cholecystectomy-laparoscopic retrieval’ with great care and like to comment. We are also using this so-called ‘drain and bagged’ technique of stoma bag. This innovative method of stoma bag utilisation for drain collection gives good quality of life to patients. To prevent this complication, we can offer two solutions. The first is regarding the technique of drain fixation to the skin and second for the drain visibility. Skin incision should be appropriate. The size of tube in French multiplied by 0.3 is appropriate, as an example for a 30 French drain a 10 mm skin incision is appropriate. The suture on the skin should not be tight to prevent skin necrosis. However, the suture on the drain should be tight and have multiple throws. While using the cut and bag technique, the patient needs to be aware of the drain stump inside the stoma bag; this can be made easier for the patient using a transparent stoma bag. A Jackson–Pratt drain completely obviates the need for a cut and bag technique and can be used when the expected drain contents are not very thick and large in amount.
