Abstract: We propose FisheyeVR, a zooming interface in VR dynamically providing users a larger software FOV by zooming out to a shorter virtual focal length, trading in an acceptable visual distortion for more context. We conduct studies to (1) understand the visual distortion of zoom-out FOVs, (2) test 4 triggering methods with common VR scenarios and (3) evaluate the integrated FisheyeVR system. Our findings demonstrate that FisheyeVR not only significantly reduces users’ physical effort and oculomotor simulator sickness but also maintains performance levels, accompanied by positive feedback.
