Correlation analysis of hot-mix asphalt and dense fine aggregate matrix properties under varying freeze-thaw cycles

Abstract: The fine aggregate matrix (FAM) is a crucial component of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) as it significantly impacts the overall performance of HMA. However, the specific influence of FAM on the low-temperature performance of HMA has yet to be systematically explored. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the factors affecting HMA under low-temperature conditions, freeze-thaw cycles were employed to simulate the effects of low-temperature damage. HMA and its corresponding graded dense fine aggregate matrix (DFAM) were subjected to a 40-day freeze-thaw cycle, each 24 hours representing a single freeze-thaw event. The Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) was then used to assess the impact on the materials by conducting frequency sweep, linear amplitude sweep, and static creep tests on HMA and DFAM specimens at ten-day intervals. The results demonstrated a significant correlation between DFAM and the low-temperature and fatigue performance of HMA, and the difference in the change in properties of the two materials was revealed under freeze-thaw conditions. The analysis shows limitations in judging the performance of HMA based on DFAM alone. For a comprehensive understanding, it is crucial to consider the complex interactions among DFAM, the aggregate-asphalt interface, and the coarse aggregate within HMA.
