Abstract: This paper considers how the reformist abbot Estêvão de Aguiar, in close association with the Portuguese crown, managed the coexistence of two antagonistic notions at the helm of Portugal’s principal Cistercian house: the Cistercian ideal of Santa Maria of Alcobaça as Domus Spiritualis and the temporal reality of a community where travel and circulation were vital.
