Abstract: The positive and negative consequences of the development of virgin and fallow lands in the Republic of Khakassia are reflected. Using the example of forest shelter-belts created after the development of virgin lands in the south of the Minusinsk Basin, their positive role in the fight against deflation and increasing the fertility of ordinary chernozem is considered. The multifaceted role of existing forest belts is shown. The main tasks for the development of field-protective afforestation are outlined in order to ensure environmental and food security of the region.
