Global Atrocity Justice Constellations

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In this brief introduction we explain the origins of the 13 papers in the Global Atrocity Justice Constellations project, and identify some important characteristics of the countries covered. The introduction identifies a diverse set of engagements between states and international criminal justice shaped by historical experience, domestic politics and resources. We find that as a collectiion the papers highlight a complex and dynamic landscape of atrocity justice, where International Criminal Tribunals (ICTs) serve as crucial but not isolated nodes within a broader, interconnected framework of justice delivery. The success of atrocity justice on a global scale, therefore, hinges not just on the strength of ICTs but on the willingness and capacity of states to prosecute international crimes within their own judicial systems.
