Optimization of mechanical properties in alfa/epoxy biocomposites: a com-prehensive study on the correlation between volume fraction, hardness, and mechanical characteristics

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This comprehensive study explores the optimization of Alfa/Epoxy biocomposites for industrial applications, focusing on the intricate relationship between Alfa fiber volume fraction, mechanical properties, and Brinell hardness. Biocomposite samples, incorporating Alfa fiber content ranging from 5% to 40%, underwent rigorous tensile testing, hardness measurements, and detailed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The research delves into the effects of NaOH treatment on fiber-matrix adhesion and overall composite performance, providing crucial insights into surface modification techniques. Results reveal an optimal fiber content range of 15-25% for maximizing mechanical properties, with performance notably deteriorating at higher concentrations. A strong correlation between Brinell hardness and mechanical properties was observed up to 30% fiber content, suggesting potential non-destructive testing methods for quality control in industrial settings. SEM analysis demonstrates the significant impact of NaOH treatment on fiber surface morphology, indicating improved fiber-matrix interface and enhanced stress transfer capabilities. This study not only provides valuable insights for biocomposite design and manufacturing but also offers promising pathways for developing high-performance, sustainable materials. The findings have far-reaching implications for automotive, construction, and textile industries, contributing to the advancement of eco-friendly composite materials with superior mechanical properties.
