Abstract: The presence of statues in two of d’Annunzio’s tragedies (La Gioconda and La figlia di Jorio) will be analysed, proposing a comparison between examples of ‘living statues’ from ancient times and the late nineteenth‐early twentieth century period. In the second part, reference will be made to the scientist culture of the late nineteenth century. Here, we will make use of a theory according to which they could be two fetishes that direct the flow of thoughts of the protagonists against their opponents.
