The purpose of this study was to map dental visits and consumption of dental services in the adult population 20-70 years of age. The data were collected using a questionnaire sent out to a representative sample of adults (n=6 281) in the autumn of 2023. The response rate was 48.4%. Seventy-nine percent of the population had visited a dentist or a dental hygienist during the last year. Eighty-six percent had visited a dentist during the last two years. The level of contact varied according to age. The mean cost for those who had visited a dentist or dental hygienist during the last year was NOK 3 435. The cost was lowest for the age group 20-29 years (NOK 2 273) and highest for the age group 60-70 years (NOK 4 576). Seventy-four percent had paid NOK 3000 or less. For those who had visited a dentist during the last year, 32% had had one or more fillings. Extractions were the next most common type of treatment: 8.5% of the patients. About 7% of patients had received crowns, bridges, root fillings or periodontal treatment.
