Becoming Bat

Abstract: What is it like to be a bat? Inspired by Thomas Nagel's philosophical inquiry, we delve into the enigma of truly comprehending the experience of another species. Becoming Bat is a bat-centric universe created by a collective of artists, technologists, interspecies co-creators, and composers, each relying on each other's talents to shape an empathic tone and light for bats. ‘Becoming Bat’ consists of three elements: the ‘Nocturnal Fugue Performance Synopsis’, the ‘Nocturnal Fugue Film Synopsis’, and the ‘EchoVision Synopsis’. The first two provide an immersive bat world, where their social vocalizations transform into evocative music set to imaginative digital recreations of their natural habitats. The ‘EchoVision Synopsis’ is an immersive art installation that uses sound visualization and mixed reality technology to allow participants to experience the world as bats do. This work encourages an ecocentric view, fostering understanding between species and promoting appreciation for how non-human creatures interact with their ecosystems.
