Exaggerated Pressure Recovery during Pregnancy: A Multimodal Approach to Assessment of Prosthetic Aortic Stenosis Severity
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Most patients with mild to moderate aortic stenosis (AS) tolerate pregnancy well. Those with severe AS, however, are at an increased risk for maternal and fetal complications, including heart failure, prematurity, and low birth weight.1 Pregnancy represents a high cardiac output state, with aortic valve (AV) gradients expected to increase nearly 2-fold by the third trimester.2 When measured AV gradients exceed that expected from pregnancy, potential considerations include progressive AV disease, pressure recovery, and altered aortic biomechanics following prosthetic aortic graft replacement.
