Influence of gastric juice on color of CAD-CAM materials

Abstract: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of simulated gastric juice on color change of five different CAD-CAM monolithic materials. Forty-five rectangular specimens (n=9) were fabricated by feldspathic ceramic (Vitablocs Mark II), resin nanoceramic (Grandio), zirconia lithium silicate (Vita Suprinity), polymer-infiltrated hybrid ceramic (Vita Enamic) and lithium disilicate (IPS e.max). The surface of the specimens were polished with silicon carbide papers (600, 1200, 1500 grit) and polisher rubbers. The specimens were immersed in artificial gastric acid (0.2% [w/v] sodium chloride in 0.7% [v/v] hydrochloric acid, pH = 1.2) for 91 hours. The color coordinates L*, a*, and b* were measured with a spectrophotometer before and after gastric acid exposure. CIEDE2000 color difference formula was used to determine color differences. The differences in color (∆E00) presented by the materials before and after gastric acid exposure were compared using one way ANOVA and the Tukey post-hoc test (a=.05). A statistically significant difference in ∆E00 was found among the tested materials (p < .001). Feldspathic ceramic presented a significantly higher ∆E00 values than polymer-infiltrated hybrid ceramic (p=0.003). Color differences were only below the acceptability threshold (∆E00 =1.8) for polymer-infiltrated hybrid ceramic after gastric acid exposure. The color stability of polymer-infiltrated hybrid ceramic was higher that of feldspathic ceramic, as it presented significant and clinically acceptable differences for ∆E00 after gastric acid exposure. Polymer-infiltrated hybrid ceramic materials may be advantageous for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease due to their color stability.
