Developmental dental anomalies in children with molar incisor hypomineralization
Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Various developmental dental anomalies could occur in children with molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) and affect tooth development. This study aimed to evaluate the presence and variety of dental anomalies in children with and without MIH. Children who applied to Yeditepe University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, and met the study criteria were included in this study. The study protocol was approved by the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of the School of Medicine of the University of Yeditepe (2020-No:1287). Orthopantogram radiographs taken within the scope of routine care were evaluated for dental anomalies. A pediatric dentist evaluated the panoramic radiographs of 68 children with MIH and 68 children without MIH, aged 7-15 years, for developmental dental anomalies. The presence and characteristics of dental anomalies were determined. Data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test, Pearson chi-square test, and Binary Logistic Regression model (p<0.05). While the most common anomaly in the MIH group was dilaceration (52.4%), the least common anomalies were fusion, gemination, and infra-occlusion of primary molars (0%). No significant difference was observed in the frequencies and distribution of developmental dental anomalies between the MIH and control groups (p>0.05). Shape anomalies were statistically more common in the MIH group than in the control group (p<0.05). The shape anomalies were higher in the MIH group. While dilaceration was most frequently seen in this group, no significant difference was observed between the MIH and the control group.
