Loading behavior of short fiber-reinforced CAD/CAM endocrowns following fatigue-aging

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of experimental short fiber-reinforced CAD/CAM block (SFRC CAD) on the fracture resistance of endocrowns in comparison with different commercial materials. 60 sound mandibular molar teeth with similar occlusal sizes (± 1 mm) were used. Standard preparations simulating an endocrown cavity were prepared and the teeth were divided into four groups randomly. After the digital photoimpression of the prepared cavities using a dental intraoral scanner (CEREC, Sirona Dental Systems Inc., NY), the restorations were designed (4 mm high) and milled using IPS emax, Cerasmart 270, Katana Avencia and SFRC CAD blocks (n=15/per group). Restoration were cemented with self-adhesive dual-cure resin cement (G-Cem One,GC,Japan). Cycle fatigue aging was applied to the restored teeth prior to the quasi-static fracture load test. The specimens were immersed in a 37 °C water bath within a chewing simulator (MOD,Esetron Smart Robotechnologies,Turkey). Following cyclic fatigue aging (1.000.000 cycles), a quasi-static load was applied using a universal testing machine. Results were evaluated with One-way ANOVA test and post hoc Tukey HSD test. According to the data, there are statistically significant differences in fracture resistance values between different CAD/CAM materials (p<0.05). The highest fracture resistance value was observed in the experimental SFRC CAD group (3025 N). The lowest value was observed in the IPS emax group (2295 N). Type of CAD/CAM materials affected the fracture resistance of endocrowns. In future, experimental SFRC CAD blocks could serve as an alternative material for endocrown restoration.
